Lucky Lantern opened in Eugene, Oregon in November 2001 after many years of dreaming and planning. Owners are Jay Trueba and Robin Mauney.
Robin lived in Cambodia for a short time in 95 & 96, and continued to travel back and forth to visit Cambodia and other neighboring countries. Robin fell in love with Southeast Asia and its many beautiful crafts and people. She met many artisans and brought back gifts to family and friends. On each return trip, family and friends would "order" gifts and slowly it became a small way to help local crafters sell their products.
In 2001 Jay finally visited and also fell in love with the region. But Jay did more than bring a few of this and that back home. He started a business - based on the principal of creating a market for crafts made by individual crafters and small businesses in Vietnam, Thailand, & Cambodia. The rest is history.
The "flagship" product of Lucky Lantern is beautiful silk lanterns, but Lucky Lantern also carries many other handicrafts of Southeast Asia. Watch our website for new products. Buy - and you will be helping individual business owners in Vietnam & Cambodia rebuild the handicraft industry after many years of war and isolation.
Lucky Lantern's are handmade in Vietnam of Silk and Bamboo. In Vietnam the lanterns are thought to bring good fortune - hence the name The Lucky Lantern.
Each lantern is the fruit of a lot of hard, skillful labor. The process begins with making the bamboo frame of the lantern. First, strips of bamboo are carefully whittled, then softened by soaking in water. Each is then gently bent into the desired shape to make the frame of the lantern. After the frame is completed, colorful silk is stretched over the frame resulting in a unique lucky lantern.
Lucky Lanterns make a unique addition to any decor.
Products sold by Lucky Lantern are created primarily by individual crafters and/or purchased from small businesses in Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam: Friends we have gotten to know in our travels - your purchase helps to provide a livelihood to these families.
